Hello! I’m Giselle General.

I help, I learn, I make, and want to help some more.

My interests and professional history incorporates a unique blend of creativity and community service. I completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta. But instead of a business-oriented employment, I worked in the not-for-profit sector as the Volunteer and Communications Coordinator for the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, where I support a few hundred volunteers in providing accessible legal services to the community. After eight years, I decided to pursue a shift in my career path by taking a big risk, quitting my job with no new employment lined up. During this time, I started an ambitious project of starting my debut full-length book publication, a memoir about my childhood. Communications and making an impact continued to be a theme in this stage of my career as I currently work as a Communications Advisor with the Government of Alberta, ensuring that media content and announcements from the government are effectively serving Albertans. My new role as a public servant is pretty new and I’m learning a lot.

Outside my paid job, I strive to help and share to make the community better. From sharing myself literally by donating blood and hair, sitting in government-based and community-based boards, assisting my cultural community at events, being a freelance columnist for an ethic newspaper, and revving my sewing machine to craft fabric items free of charge, I live by the principle that volunteering magnifies the impact that social causes aim to achieve.

Life is about taking bold risks, and both in 2021 and 2025 I pursued running for Edmonton City Council as a councillor for my area, the electoral ward of sipiwiyiniwak. In 2021, I came second place, which is a remarkable standing given that I am running against an incumbent who ended up winning the election. In 2025 I came third place at 300 less votes than my 2021 performance, something considered as respectable given that is was an open race against several well-funded and sophisticated campaigns.

My hobbies involve writing in my personal blog, doing arts and crafts – particularly using recycled materials, playing board games, and spending time with my boys at home – my significant other and my brother.
